Question: I have seen the results of a drilling rig that bore holes in the ground and by chance hit underground feeders , we know that engineering should prevent things like that by having a survey completed before the work it started. [Poor planning]My question would be should the drilling equipment be grounded ? This could be large portable equipment taken from site to site by truck. It's possible to strike one phase first before contacting either the second phase or the egc , cables could be run in pvc conduit. 500amp <600vThanks for responses with this.
Yes, the drilling equipment should be grounded.
Reasons for Grounding
Safety
Grounding provides a low-impedance path for fault currents to flow, protecting workers and equipment from electrical hazards. In case of an accidental contact with underground feeders, grounding will channel the fault current through the grounding system instead of through the equipment or workers.
Prevent Electrical Damage
Fault currents can cause damage to the drilling rig and its components. Proper grounding helps dissipate these currents and protects the equipment from overheating or electrical damage.
Code Compliance
Most electrical codes require that portable equipment with metal enclosures be grounded to prevent electrical shocks.
Grounding Method
The drilling equipment should be grounded using a grounding rod driven into the ground near the work area. A grounding conductor (e.g., a copper wire) should connect the equipment to the grounding rod. The grounding conductor should be sized appropriately for the equipment's fault current rating. If the cables are run in PVC conduit, the conduit must be grounded to provide a continuous grounding pathway.
Additional Considerations: The grounding system should be inspected and tested regularly to ensure its effectiveness. The drilling crew should be trained on proper grounding procedures and should verify the grounding connection before operating the equipment.* If the drilling rig is moved frequently, it is important to re-establish the grounding connection each time it is set up.By following these guidelines, you can help ensure the safety of your workers and equipment during drilling operations.
