Question: When did code start requireing a main breaker if you had more than six breakers in a panel? I was doing a fire inspection the other day and it had 5 panels in the church and only one had a main breaker. Thanks
The requirement for a main breaker in electrical panels with more than six circuits was introduced in the 1971 edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC).The NEC is a set of standards for the safe installation and operation of electrical systems in the United States. It is updated every three years, and the 1971 edition was the first to require main breakers in panels with more than six circuits. Flag for review
