Question: I am installing a cooktop on top of a wall oven (in the same cabinet). The wall oven has conduit for the electrical wire, but the cooktop does not. Do i have to encase the cooktop wire in conduit? If so, I'd have to cut of the end plug, so how do I reattach it in the best manner? Thanks, M

Yes, you should encase the cooktop wire in conduit.Electrical Code Requirements

The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that flexible cords and cables used as branch circuit wiring be protected from physical damage. Conduit provides this protection, especially when the wire is exposed or subject to potential impact or damage.

How to Encase the Wire in Conduit

1.

Cut the Plug

Use wire cutters to cut off the end plug of the cooktop cord.2.

Strip the Wires

Strip approximately 6 inches of insulation from the ends of each wire.3.

Connect the Wires

Connect the wires from the cooktop cord to the wires in the conduit using wire nuts or terminal blocks. Make sure the connections are secure and insulated with electrical tape.4.

Pull the Wire through the Conduit

Carefully pull the cooktop cord through the conduit.5.

Secure the Conduit

Use conduit clips or straps to secure the conduit to the wall or cabinet.6.

Reconnect the Plug

Once the wire is encased in conduit, you will need to reattach a new plug to the end of the cord. Purchase a new plug that is compatible with the amperage and voltage requirements of the cooktop. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to properly connect the plug.

Connecting a New Plug

1.

Match the Wires

Identify the wires by color and connect them to the corresponding terminals on the plug. Usually, black is hot, white is neutral, and green or bare wire is ground.2.

Secure the Wires

Tighten the terminal screws to hold the wires securely.3.

Insulate the Connections

Wrap electrical tape around the terminal screws and wire nuts to prevent shorts.4.

Secure the Plug

Push the plug body over the wires and tighten the screws to secure it.

Safety Precautions:
Always turn off the power to the circuit before working on electrical wiring. Use proper tools and safety gear when handling electrical components.* Consult with a licensed electrician if you are unsure about any aspect of the installation. Flag for review
