Question: So I am an industrial guy doing some data work and I have not done so since my apprenticeship. Ran 9 drops of 4 cat5e. 2 for 4 line phone system and 2 for Data. My question is, should I use 8 wire jacks for phone and terminate at 568a or should I use 6 wire jacks. If 6 wire is the suggestion, should I terminate as suggested on keystone? Thanks for your helpJim B.

Option 1: 8-wire Jacks with 568A Termination Recommended for phone systems. Allows you to use all 8 wires for the phone line. Terminate the jacks according to the 568A standard.

Option 2: 6-wire Jacks with Keystone Termination
Recommended for data connections. Uses only 6 of the 8 wires (pins 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8). Follow the termination instructions provided on the keystone jack.

Recommendation

If you are using the cables for both phone and data, it is

best to use 6-wire jacks with keystone termination
. This will allow you to use the same type of jack for both applications. For the phone lines, terminate the jacks using the keystone instructions for pins 1, 2, 3, 6.For the data lines, terminate the jacks using the keystone instructions for pins 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8.

Additional Information: 568A is a wiring standard that specifies the order of the wires in the cable. Keystone jacks are modular connectors that snap into patch panels or wall plates. Flag for review
