Question: Hello I am inquiring on all of your thoughts on stepping up from 240v delta 3ph (180onB) to 480 and the correct transformer to utilize.I see many answers to stepping up and I'd like to inquire on which one would you use? We have two water pumps 10hp each and I am told by the pump guy that using them at 230v would reduce the hp by 1/3. Your thoughts are appreciated on this and the Cat# of the Xfrmr in a outdoor location> 200a 240v 3ph QOB to step up to 480 to feed 2 combos sz 0 to water pumps approx.13a apiece 100' away. Thanks in advance for sparing me the salesman !!

Thoughts on Stepping Up from 240V Delta to 480V Increase in Power

Stepping up to 480V increases the voltage by a factor of √3, resulting in a higher voltage and increased power capability.

Motor Performance

Using the pumps at 240V would indeed reduce their horsepower by 1/3, as the motor's torque is proportional to the square of the voltage.

Energy Efficiency

Operating the pumps at their rated voltage (480V) ensures optimal efficiency and reduces energy consumption.

Recommended Transformer

For your specific application, a transformer with the following specifications is recommended:
Input Voltage

200A, 240V, 3-Phase Delta

Output Voltage

480V, 3-Phase Delta

Capacity

100kVA or higher (to accommodate the load of two 10hp pumps)

Outdoor Rated

Suitable for outdoor installation with appropriate enclosure

Catalog Number

Verify with the supplier for the specific manufacturer and model of the transformer.

Installation Considerations
Use a licensed electrician for all electrical work. Install the transformer in an adequately ventilated and protected location. Provide overcurrent protection for both the primary and secondary circuits. Use appropriate cable sizes and conduits to meet electrical code requirements. Ground the transformer properly to ensure safety.
