Question: I have an existing panel located on 4th floor of a remodel, we will reuse this panel and install a new panel next to it. Both panels are fed from the same panel in the basement. Existing panel has a 4" conduit to it (which is way over sized). My question is, can I put a j-box on the 4" conduit and install both panel feeds in the same conduit from the basement then run from the j-box to each panel or does both panel feeds have to have their on conduit?
You can put a j-box on the 4" conduit and install both panel feeds in the same conduit from the basement. However, you must make sure that the conduit is large enough to accommodate the total number of conductors from both panels. The conduit must also be properly supported and secured.According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), the minimum conduit size for two panel feeds is 3/4". However, you may need to use a larger conduit size if the total number of conductors is high. Here are the steps on how to install both panel feeds in the same conduit:1. Turn off the power to the existing panel.
2. Remove the knockout from the conduit body on the existing panel.3. Install a j-box on the conduit body.
4. Run the panel feeds from the basement to the j-box.5. Connect the panel feeds to the j-box.
6. Run the panel feeds from the j-box to each panel.7. Connect the panel feeds to each panel.
8. Turn on the power to the existing panel.
