Question: I am currently on a project that is requiring a coordination study. The gear manufacturer has quoted me a minimum of $7,000.00 to do the study. I have looked at the software to do it myself and looks like that is the better deal. Any recommendations on the software or should I stay away and pay the manufacturer.

Factors to Consider

Complexity of the System

The cost of software and the manufacturer's fees may vary depending on the complexity of your system.

Experience and Resources

If you have experienced engineers and software licenses available, performing the study in-house may be more cost-effective.

Time Constraints

Manufacturers may be able to complete the study more quickly than you can in-house.

Software Recommendations

GearCAT Pro
(by Optimax Systems): Comprehensive software for gear design and analysis, including coordination studies. KISSsoft (by KISSsoft AG): Specialized software for gear analysis and design. ANSYS Gear Designer (by ANSYS): Part of the ANSYS Mechanical suite, providing advanced gear analysis capabilities.

Benefits of In-House Coordination Study

Cost savings

Avoid the manufacturer's fees.

Control over the process

Make necessary adjustments and customize the study to your specific needs.

Knowledge gain

Develop an understanding of gear coordination and its impact on system performance.

Benefits of Hiring a Manufacturer

Expertise

Access to experienced engineers specializing in gear coordination.

Quick results

Manufacturers can prioritize your project and provide results within a defined timeframe.

Liability

Transfer the risk of errors or inaccuracies to the manufacturer.

Recommendation

If you have the necessary experience, resources, and time, performing the coordination study in-house using the recommended software is a viable and cost-effective option. However, if you lack the expertise or are under tight deadlines, consider hiring a reputable gear manufacturer to conduct the study.

Additional Tips:
Get quotes from multiple gear manufacturers to compare pricing and services. Review the manufacturer's track record and references for similar coordination studies.* Consider the manufacturer's support and training options for the software if you choose to do the study in-house. Flag for review
