Question: I am installing power to an older 230 volt 30 amp portable electric steam cleaning machine. Is GFCI protection manditory, I can't find anything on this topic.I want safety first but I also have a customer to think of.

Yes, GFCI protection is mandatory for portable electric steam cleaning machines.

According to the National Electrical Code (NEC) Article 422.16, all outlets supplying portable electric appliances must be protected by a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). This includes steam cleaning machines.

GFCI protection is essential for safety because it

Prevents electrical shocks from ground faults Detects and trips the circuit in less than 1/40 of a second, protecting users from severe injury or death Is a mandatory safety code requirement

Consequences of Not Using GFCI Protection

If a ground fault occurs without GFCI protection, the user could receive a severe electrical shock. If the user is working in a wet or damp environment, the risk of electrocution is even higher. The absence of GFCI protection could violate safety codes and expose both you and the customer to legal liability.

Additional Considerations

It is recommended to use a GFCI receptacle for the steam cleaner. The GFCI receptacle should be weather-resistant if the steam cleaner will be used outdoors.* Consider using an extension cord with a built-in GFCI if necessary.

Prioritizing Safety:

As a responsible installer, your safety and the safety of your clients are paramount. Installing GFCI protection for the steam cleaning machine is a critical step to prevent electrical hazards and ensure a safe working environment. Flag for review
