Question: I have a customer that has a delta 480 system and some newer automated equipment with servo motors is giving them nothing but problems unless they install an isolation transformer which gets very expensive. Anyone heard of a way to clean up delta power at the Service level?

Possible Solutions to Clean Up Delta Power at the Service Level

1. Install a Harmonic Filter

Harmonic filters remove unwanted harmonics from the power supply. This can reduce voltage distortion and improve the quality of the power being supplied to the equipment. Non-linear loads, such as servo motors, can generate harmonics that interfere with other equipment.

2. Install a Line Reactor

Line reactors reduce current harmonics and voltage waveform distortions. They add inductance to the circuit, smoothing out the power waveform. This can improve the power factor and reduce voltage drop.

3. Upgrade the Service Transformer

If the existing service transformer is not rated for the harmonic content being generated, upgrading it may be necessary. A transformer with a higher kVA rating and lower impedance can handle harmonics better.

4. Implement Surge Suppression

Surges and spikes in voltage can damage sensitive electronic equipment. Surge suppression devices, such as surge protectors or transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS), can protect equipment from voltage spikes.

5. Install a Voltage Regulator

Voltage regulators maintain a constant voltage level, regardless of fluctuations in the power supply. This can prevent voltage drops and protect equipment from damage due to voltage variations.

6. Perform a Power Quality Study

A power quality study can identify the specific power quality issues affecting the system. This can help determine the most effective solution for improving power quality.

7. Contact the Utility Provider

In some cases, the utility provider may be able to assist with improving power quality. They can provide information on harmonic distortion levels in the area or offer solutions to mitigate power quality issues.

Additional Considerations:
The specific solution or combination of solutions required will depend on the severity of the power quality issues and the equipment being used. Consultation with a qualified electrician or power quality specialist is recommended to determine the most appropriate solution.* Regular maintenance and monitoring of the power system can help prevent future power quality issues.
