Question: I leave my ladders on top of my van. Well some parts are getting rusty and the ladders are faded. I'm kinda scared these ladders aren't safe. What do you do with your ladders? And if your ladders are like mine do you still use them, or get some new ones? Thank you.

Maintaining Ladders Regular Cleaning

Clean your ladders with a mild soap solution and water to remove dirt, grime, and salt.

Inspection

Inspect your ladders regularly for any signs of damage, such as cracks, dents, or rust. Pay particular attention to the rungs, joints, and other areas subject to wear and tear.

Lubrication

Lubricate the moving parts of your ladders, such as hinges and pulleys, to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust.

Storage

Store your ladders in a dry, well-ventilated area when not in use, preferably indoors or covered with a tarp.

Ladders with Rust and Fading
Rust

Rust weakens the metal and can make ladders unsafe. If you have ladders with significant rust, it's recommended to replace them. If the rust is minor, you can try removing it with a wire brush or sandpaper and applying a rust-inhibiting paint.

Fading

Fading is typically cosmetic and does not affect the safety of the ladder. However, it can indicate prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can weaken the material. If the fading is excessive, consider replacing your ladders or painting them with a UV-resistant paint.

When to Use or Replace Ladders
Minor Rust and Fading

If the rust and fading are minor and confined to isolated areas, you may still be able to use your ladders with caution. However, monitor them closely and consider replacing them if the condition worsens.

Significant Rust or Damage

If your ladders have significant rust, cracks, dents, or other damage, they are unsafe to use. Replace them immediately.

Excessive Fading

If the fading is very excessive and accompanied by other signs of wear, consider replacing your ladders to ensure maximum safety.

Alternative Storage Options
Ladder Rack

Attach a ladder rack to the top of your van to securely store your ladders upright.

Slide-Out Undercarriage Drawer

Install a slide-out drawer under the rear of your van to store ladders horizontally.

Foldable Ladders:
Use foldable ladders that can be easily stored in your van's cargo area or on a roof rack. Flag for review
