Question: I am looking for the regulation or code that relates to residential lighted address numbers. Several municipalities have adopted this, and I need reference to the original. I thought it was the NFPA but I am not finding it...am I wrong? Thanks in advance. A point in the right direction is much appreciated.

Uniform Building Code (UBC)

Section 311.6.2 of the UBC requires all residential buildings to have exterior address numbers that are: Visible from the street At least 4 inches in height Illuminated by an exterior light fixtureInternational Fire Code (IFC)

Section 503.1.4 of the IFC also requires residential buildings to have illuminated address numbers that are:
Visible from the street during both daytime and nighttime At least 3 inches in height Illuminated by an exterior light fixtureNFPA 70: National Electrical Code (NEC)

While the NEC does not specifically require illuminated address numbers, it does require that exterior lighting fixtures be installed in a manner that ensures safe and effective illumination of the area. This would include illuminating the address numbers. See Section 225.10(A).

International Building Code (IBC)

Section 110.6 of the IBC requires that new buildings with more than one dwelling unit have illuminated address numbers that are: Visible from the street At least 4 inches in height* Illuminated by an exterior light fixtureNote: The specific requirements may vary depending on the municipality or state. It is recommended to check with the local building code authority for the applicable regulations. Flag for review
