Question: I have a 3000 sf home with a service panel that has a 200amp breaker. I want to install a 80 amp subpanel on the patio to supply 4 20 amp circuits. I am planning to hire a contractor to do the work. I want it done correctly and the question is do I need to upgrade the electrical service entrance and is there a calculator online to verify this? Just calling around I have heard no but one guy said yes and it through me off.

Do You Need to Upgrade the Electrical Service Entrance? No, you do not need to upgrade your electrical service entrance for the following reasons: The 80 Amp Subpanel Load

The total load of the 4 20 Amp circuits in the subpanel is 80 Amps (4 x 20 = 80). This is within the capacity of the existing 200 Amp service panel.

Code Requirements

The National Electrical Code (NEC) allows up to 80% of the service panel's rating to be used without requiring an upgrade. In your case, 80% of 200 Amps is 160 Amps. Since the subpanel load is only 80 Amps, it falls well within this 80% limit.

Online Calculator for Verification

You can use the following online calculator to verify your calculations: [Electrical Load Calculator](https://www.calculator.net/electrical-load-calculator.html)

Additional Considerations

Circuit Protection

Ensure that the circuits in the subpanel are properly protected with breakers or fuses rated for 20 Amps.

Conduits and Wiring

The subpanel should be connected to the main service panel using appropriate electrical conduits and wiring. The conductor size should be sufficient to handle the subpanel load.

Inspection and Permit

All electrical work should be inspected and approved by a qualified electrician and local building authorities to ensure compliance with codes and safety regulations.

Conclusion:

Based on the information provided, you do not need to upgrade your electrical service entrance to install the 80 Amp subpanel on your patio. However, it is always advisable to consult with a licensed electrician to ensure all necessary considerations are addressed and the work is done according to code and safety standards.
