Question: We have Low-Power Network-Powered Broadband CommunicationsCables running in a raceway. The contractor wants to run the fire alarm cables in same raceway. I can't find anything in NFPA 72 or 70 that would prevent this from being allowed. The fire alarm audios is power limited fire alarm circuits in shielded cable. Thanks!

NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code)

Section 12.5.3

"Fire alarm cables shall not be installed in the same raceway as class 1, class 2, or class 3 circuits."

Section 12.5.
3.1

"Exception: Class 2 or class 3 power-limited fire alarm cables rated 150 volts or less may be installed in the same raceway or enclosure with other class 2 or class 3 power-limited cables or class 1 conductors if all of the following conditions are met: (1) The fire alarm cabling is approved for the application. (2) The ampacity of the raceway or enclosure is sufficient for all conductors. (3) The fire alarm cables are provided with suitable protection against physical damage."

NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code)

Article 725 (Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 Remote-Control and Signaling Circuits)

Does not explicitly address the installation of fire alarm cables in the same raceway with other types of cables.

Based on the above code provisions

Power-limited fire alarm cables rated 150 volts or less may be installed in the same raceway as the low-power network-powered broadband communications cables if

The fire alarm cables are approved for the application. The raceway or enclosure has sufficient ampacity for all conductors. The fire alarm cables are protected against physical damage.*

However, non-power-limited fire alarm cables (e.g., analog audio circuits) should not be installed in the same raceway with class 1, class 2, or class 3 circuits.
Therefore, it is generally permissible to install power-limited fire alarm cables in the same raceway as the network-powered broadband communications cables, as long as the conditions outlined in NFPA 72 are met. Flag for review
