Question: We are cleaning up after an unlicesened electrician and we have a small corn dryer that is feed from a ground mount isolation point. The dryer has a Square D JDL26000 switch in it with a door mount disconect but has no overcurrent protection.Would it be acceptable to mount fuse holders after the switch in order to provide overcurent protection? The inspector said to make sure the disconect switch is service rated. It has a 25k AIC rating just no overcurrent protection. Thanks for the input.
Yes, it would be acceptable to mount fuse holders after the switch to provide overcurrent protection.1. Service-Rated Disconnect Switch
The inspector is correct in requiring a service-rated disconnect switch. This means the switch must be designed to disconnect the full load current of the equipment it serves. The Square D JDL26000 switch with a 25k AIC rating meets this requirement as it is suitable for service equipment with a maximum fault current of 25,000 amps.
2. Overcurrent Protection
The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires overcurrent protection for all electrical circuits to prevent damage in the event of an overload or fault. Adding fuse holders after the switch will provide overcurrent protection. The fuses used must be sized appropriately for the motor's full-load current and the circuit's voltage and amperage rating.
3. Installation
Install the fuse holders in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and the NEC. Use proper wire sizes and connections. Ensure that the fuse holders are accessible for maintenance and replacement.
Additional Considerations: The corn dryer should be connected to the isolation point using a grounding conductor in accordance with the NEC. The dryer's electrical system should be inspected and tested thoroughly before energizing it.* Consider contacting a qualified electrician for assistance with the installation and inspection process.
