Question: Hi everyone,I have almost 400 protection relays in my distribution and i don't have any scada system. All relays have modbus or courier communication protocol on RS485. I want to design a scada but i don't want to use any RTU or PLC. I found a device which is named Kalkitech SYCN2000.http://kalkitech.com/offerings/sync-field_protocol_io_gateways/This device converts the courier and modbus protocol to IEC61850. And also device has internally programmable I/Os.I am going to use this device to take voltage, current and power values for scada. And i am going to use internally I/Os of this device to open and close function of circuit breakers. The main idea of using this device to adapt my old system to the new technology (IEC61850) and to get out of RTU or PLC.I attached the shecmatic of my distribution center and the structure of SCADA. Can i take your comments about this subject.
Overall Design
Your design concept of using the Kalkitech SYCN2000 to convert Modbus and Courier protocols to IEC61850 and eliminate the need for RTUs or PLCs is a viable approach. This solution can simplify the system architecture and reduce hardware costs.
Device Compatibility
The SYCN2000 supports Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP/IP protocols, which should be compatible with most of your protection relays. However, it is important to verify that all your relays support these protocols. Additionally, the SYCN2000 supports IEC61850 Goose messaging, which can be used for communicating status and control information.
Data Acquisition
Using the SYCN2000 to acquire voltage, current, and power values from your protection relays is a reasonable approach. The device's ability to convert Modbus and Courier data to IEC61850 makes it suitable for integration into a SCADA system.
Control Interface
The SYCN2000's internal programmable I/Os allow you to control circuit breakers directly from the device. This is a convenient feature that eliminates the need for additional control hardware. However, it is important to ensure that the SYCN2000's I/Os are compatible with the circuit breakers' control inputs.
SCADA Structure
The proposed SCADA structure, with the SYCN2000 devices connected to a central master station, is a common architecture for substation automation systems. The master station will be responsible for collecting data from the SYCN2000 devices, displaying it on a graphical interface, and providing control capabilities.
Considerations Cybersecurity
Ensure that the SYCN2000 devices and the SCADA system are properly configured to prevent unauthorized access or cyberattacks.
Reliability
Consider the availability and reliability of the SYCN2000 devices and the SCADA system to ensure uninterrupted operation of the distribution network.
Maintenance
Plan for regular maintenance and firmware updates for the SYCN2000 devices and the SCADA system to ensure optimal performance.
Training
Provide adequate training to personnel on the operation and maintenance of the new SCADA system.
Conclusion
Overall, your design approach using the Kalkitech SYCN2000 devices is feasible and can provide a cost-effective and modern solution for monitoring and controlling your distribution network. It is important to carefully consider the device compatibility, cybersecurity, reliability, maintenance, and training requirements to ensure a successful implementation. Flag for review
