Question: I hired an electrician to install an electrical connection to a water well that will be drilled in the next two weeks. Unfortunately I now understand what I got was a non-code compliant, potentially unsafe installation. I am looking for advice on the best way to correct what I have now so that it is safe and to code. The diagram shows the current installation.
Current Installation
3-wire underground feeder cable (UF) runs from the main panel to an outdoor subpanel. The UF cable is buried underground. The subpanel is not weatherproof. The subpanel is not grounded. The well pump is not connected to the subpanel.
Code Compliance and Safety Issues
UF cable must be protected from damage by rodents and other animals. Outdoor subpanels must be weatherproof. All subpanels must be grounded. The well pump must be connected to the subpanel through a disconnect switch.
Steps to Correct the Installation
1. Replace the UF Cable
Dig up the existing UF cable and replace it with a new UF cable that is buried at least 18 inches deep. Protect the cable from rodents and other animals by using PVC conduit or other approved methods.
2. Install a Weatherproof Subpanel
Replace the existing non-weatherproof subpanel with a weatherproof subpanel. Mount the subpanel on a concrete pad or other suitable foundation.
3. Ground the Subpanel
Install a ground rod near the subpanel. Connect the ground rod to the subpanel grounding terminal using a grounding wire.
4. Connect the Well Pump
Run a new wire from the subpanel to the well pump. Install a disconnect switch on the wire. Connect the wire to the well pump and the disconnect switch.
5. Inspection and Certification
Once the installation is complete, have it inspected by a licensed electrician. The electrician will ensure that the installation is safe and in compliance with the electrical code.
Additional Recommendations: Consider using a licensed electrician for the entire project, including the drilling of the well. Follow all manufacturer's instructions for the installation of the well pump and electrical equipment.* Ensure that all electrical connections are made properly and securely. Flag for review
