Question: I want to control a bunch of fans that are spread out with one switch. A 120V switch will be wired to open/close relays in each fan control circuit. The relays are located at the respective fan. Do I need a disconnect switch on the 120V control circuit at each fan.

Yes, you need a disconnect switch on the 120V control circuit at each fan.

Reasons

Safety

In the event of a fault or accidental activation, a disconnect switch allows you to quickly isolate the fan and prevent electrical shock or fire.

Maintenance

When servicing or replacing the fan, the disconnect switch enables you to safely de-energize the control circuit without affecting other fans.*

National Electrical Code (NEC) Requirement

The NEC requires that all electrical equipment have a means of disconnect within sight. For this application, a disconnect switch at each fan would meet this requirement.

Placement

Place the disconnect switch near the fan, in an accessible location where it can be easily reached in an emergency. It should be clearly labeled as the "Fan Control Disconnect Switch."

Type of Disconnect Switch:

Use a single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) disconnect switch rated for 120V and the appropriate amperage for the control circuit. Flag for review
