Question: In review of NEC 430.62 (in the Handbook), I notice that we must assume that the protective device is the same for both the feeder and motor branch circuit. Does this require that if I have a breaker serving the feeder that I must use enclosed breakers to feed each motor or are fused disconnects acceptable? I believe the code is stating that we assume the same type of protective device for calculation purposes, but that it's acceptable to have a breaker feed multiple fused disconnects (via gutter).Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

The code is stating that we assume the same type of protective device for calculation purposes. It is acceptable to have a breaker feed multiple fused disconnects (via gutter). The reason for this is that the NEC is concerned with the overall protection of the circuit, not the individual components. As long as the circuit is protected by a single protective device, the NEC is satisfied. In your case, the breaker serving the feeder is the single protective device for the circuit. The fused disconnects are simply providing additional protection for the individual motors.I hope this helps! Flag for review
