Question: Greetings All,I just got a question about a three gang box with a mud ring where the wall covering (double layer sheetrock) is greater than 15/16". Apparently they do not make a mud ring deeper than 13/16 for greater than two gang rings. The CBC requires no more than a 1/8" gap from device ring to FOF. I am unsure if this applies in the case of low voltage. What are the solutions for this type of situation? Thanks,MacG
Solutions for a Three-Gang Box with Mud Ring and Double-Layer Sheetrock > 15/16"
1. Extend the Mud Ring
Use a drywall saw to cut a 1/8" deep notch around the perimeter of the existing mud ring. Insert a 1/8" thick strip of plywood or another rigid material into the notch and secure it with screws or adhesive. Reinstall the mud ring over the extended portion, ensuring it is flush with the surface of the drywall.
2. Use a Reducer Ring
Install a 1/16" thick reducer ring between the mud ring and the drywall. This will reduce the gap between the device ring and the finish face by 1/16" to meet the 1/8" requirement.
3. Install a Deeper Mud Ring
If available, locate and purchase a mud ring that is deeper than 13/16" (e.g., 15/16"). Install the deeper mud ring in place of the existing one.
4. Modify the Box
Remove the box from the wall. Cut a 1/8" deep recess into the back of the box using a drywall saw. Reinstall the box in the wall and the mud ring over it.
Note: The 1/8" gap requirement applies to electrical devices, but may not be applicable to low voltage devices. Refer to the specific requirements of your local code for low voltage installations. Ensure that the method used does not compromise the integrity of the electrical box or the wall. Flag for review
