Question: For those of you that have invested in business other than our illustrious trade, what do you consider a fair payback for your $$? Percent of profit? Loan with set interest rate? Other (explain)?A lawyer is being consulted by the borrower but at this point I can set the terms or at least suggest how I would like repaid. I do not expect a large profit share for several years but could be pleasantly suprised.

Fair Payback Considerations

Percent of Profit

Can incentivize growth and profitability for the business. May be suitable for investors with a high-risk appetite. Ensure a revenue sharing agreement is in place to define the split.

Loan with Set Interest Rate

Provides a predictable and stable return. May be more suitable for risk-averse investors. Consider the current market interest rates to determine a fair rate.

Other Options

Royalty Payments

A percentage of revenue generated by a specific product or service. Can provide a recurring income stream.

Equity

Ownership stake in the business. Can provide significant upside potential but also carries risk.

Loan with Convertible Debt

A loan that can be converted into equity at a future date. Offers a balance between debt and equity.

Factors to Consider

Nature of the Investment

High-growth potential businesses may warrant a higher payback, while stable and low-risk investments may yield a lower return.

Risk Tolerance

Investors should assess their risk tolerance and choose an option that aligns with their financial goals.

Current Market Conditions

Market interest rates and investment trends can influence fair payback expectations.

Negotiation Power

The strength of the investor's negotiating position can affect the terms of repayment.

Suggested Terms:

For a loan with set interest rate: Consider a rate slightly above the current market interest rate to account for the risk involved. Set a reasonable repayment period (e.g., 3-5 years) to provide the business with time to establish itself. Include provisions for early repayment without penalty. For a percent of profit: Negotiate a fair revenue sharing agreement that aligns with the expected profitability of the business. Consider a vesting period to ensure the business generates consistent revenue before profit sharing commences. Set clear conditions for triggering profit-sharing payments.Remember to seek legal advice before finalizing any repayment terms. Flag for review
