Question: In alternating current, is the alternating just between phases, or is neutral alternating as well ? I know neutral is for the imbalances.

In an alternating current (AC) system, the voltage and current alternate in direction and magnitude. This alternation occurs between phases and between the phases and neutral. Alternation between phases

In a three-phase AC system, the three phases are offset by 120 degrees. This means that the voltage and current in each phase reach their maximum and minimum values at different times. The alternation between phases is what creates the rotating magnetic field that is used to drive AC motors.

Alternation between phases and neutral:
The neutral conductor in an AC system is typically connected to the center point of the three-phase system. This means that the voltage between each phase and neutral is also alternating. The alternation between phases and neutral is necessary to provide a return path for the current. Therefore, in an AC system, the alternation occurs both between phases and between phases and neutral. Neutral is not just for imbalances; it also provides a return path for the current. Flag for review
