Question: With copper wire costing more everyday, "value" engineering is all I hear. Can you use MC cable with aluminum conductors as feeders in a nursing home. Then does the ECG have to be insulated. Looks to me that Southwire is saying that their cable can be used.

Can MC Cable with Aluminum Conductors be Used as Feeders in a Nursing Home?Yes. According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), Article 392.10(B)(2), "MC cables with aluminum conductors shall be permitted as feeder or branch circuit wiring."Does the ECG Have to be Insulated? No. The NEC does not require ECG (equipment grounding conductors) in MC cables with aluminum conductors to be insulated. However, it is recommended to insulate the ECGs for added protection against contact with other conductors or grounded surfaces.

Southwire's Position on MC Cable with Aluminum Conductors

Southwire's website states that their MC cables with aluminum conductors meet the requirements of the NEC for use as feeder wiring. They also provide recommendations for proper installation and termination of these cables.

Additional Considerations

Connections

Ensure that the connectors used for MC cables with aluminum conductors are compatible with aluminum.

Ampacity

Aluminum conductors have a lower ampacity than copper conductors. Consult the NEC tables for the appropriate ampacity ratings.

Expansion and Contraction

Aluminum conductors expand and contract more than copper conductors. Allow for sufficient slack in the cables to accommodate these changes.

Corrosion

Aluminum is more susceptible to corrosion than copper. Protect the cables from moisture and other corrosive elements.

Conclusion:

Based on the NEC and Southwire's recommendations, MC cables with aluminum conductors can be used as feeders in a nursing home. It is not required to insulate the ECGs, but it is recommended for added protection. Proper installation and maintenance are crucial to ensure the safe and reliable operation of these cables.
