Are night lights required?Yes, night lights are required in certain occupancies according to the International Fire Code (IFC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

In what types of occupancies are night lights required?

Night lights are required in the following occupancies: Healthcare occupancies (e.g., hospitals, nursing homes) Educational occupancies (e.g., schools, colleges) Residential occupancies (e.g., apartments, hotels) Assembly occupancies (e.g., theaters, churches) Business occupancies (e.g., offices, warehouses)Is minimal illumination required in warehouses/offices when they are not occupied and general lighting is switched off?

Yes, minimal illumination is required in warehouses/offices when they are not occupied and general lighting is switched off. This is known as "security lighting" and serves the following purposes:
To provide visibility for security personnel and emergency responders To deter crime and vandalism To help occupants evacuate safely in the event of an emergencyThe IFC and NFPA do not specify a specific level of illumination for security lighting, but it should be adequate to: Allow occupants to see exits and other important safety features Provide clear visibility for security personnel and emergency respondersException

Security lighting is not required in warehouses/offices that are equipped with a

fire alarm system
. The strobe lights of the fire alarm system provide sufficient illumination for egress and security purposes. Flag for review
