Question: We have a few 7.5 480 motors used with vfd . VFD don't seem to last very long before we have to replace the vfd . The vfd 's come up with a " 3 ground fault " and 41 IBGT CODE . Vfd won't reset reset to operate at all. Will using load reactor help the vfd last longer in service ? Don't know if operator reset the vfd OL'S at all before calling for help. He said it tripped once and called repairs. The vfd is set for internal o l protection . Can't understand wHy they didn;t trip first. The motor has been megged and is ok.These are C H svx9000 af drives. Any ideas to keep these units to last longer ?
Factors Contributing to VFD Failure Ground Faults
These typically occur due to insulation breakdown in the motor or VFD. A load reactor can help absorb voltage spikes and reduce the risk of ground faults.
IGBT Failure
This can result from overvoltage, overcurrent, or excessive heat. Proper motor sizing and VFD configuration are crucial.
Potential Solutions1. Load Reactor
Installing a load reactor in series with the motor can reduce voltage transients and protect the VFD from ground faults. Choose a reactor with the appropriate inductance for the motor size and application.
2. Proper Reset Procedures
Ensure that operators are trained to properly reset overloads before calling for repairs. Overloads should only be reset after the fault condition has been resolved.
3. Optimize VFD Settings
Review the VFD settings to ensure that they are appropriate for the motor and application. Adjust settings such as current limits, fault trip levels, and thermal protection.
4. Reduce Heat Build-up
Ensure proper ventilation for the VFD to prevent overheating. Consider using a heat sink or fan to improve cooling.
Additional Tips Regular Maintenance
Schedule regular inspections and maintenance for the VFD and motor.
Motor Insulation Testing
Periodically test the motor insulation to ensure its integrity.
Use Surge Protection
Install surge protectors to protect the VFD from voltage spikes.
Consider External Overload Protection
Use external overload relays in addition to the internal VFD protection to provide redundancy.
Regarding the Specific VFD Model (CH SVX9000 AF) CH VFDs are known for their reliability and efficiency. However, the "3 ground fault" and "41 IGBT code" errors indicate a specific issue.* Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service technician to investigate the root cause and recommend specific corrective actions.
