Question: I have a 15hp 3 phase motor that needs a vfd. There is only single phase available but have been informed that you can use a vfd as a phase convertor as long as you derate and size the vfd larger than your motor load. Wondering if anyone has had success with this?

Can a VFD be used as a Phase Converter for a 3-Phase Motor?

Yes, it is possible to use a VFD as a phase converter for a 3-phase motor. This is known as a "back-to-back" configuration.

Considerations

Derating

The VFD must be sized larger than the motor load, typically by 150-200%.

Power Factor

The VFD will introduce a lower power factor, which may require additional compensation.

Cost

VFDs that are specifically designed as phase converters can be more expensive than general-purpose VFDs.

Success Rates

The success of using a VFD as a phase converter depends on several factors, including:

VFD Quality

Higher-quality VFDs tend to perform better as phase converters.

Motor Load

The motor load should be relatively constant and non-fluctuating.

Environmental Conditions

VFDs should be protected from moisture, dust, and vibration.

Recommendations

If you intend to use a VFD as a phase converter, consider the following recommendations:

Consult a Qualified Electrician

This is essential to ensure proper installation and safety.

Use a High-Quality VFD

Look for VFDs that are specifically designed for phase conversion applications.

Oversize the VFD

Size the VFD at least 150-200% of the motor load.

Monitor Power Factor

Use a power factor meter to monitor the power factor and make adjustments if necessary.

Potential Issues

Voltage Imbalance

VFDs can create voltage imbalances, which can affect motor performance.

Harmonics

VFDs generate harmonics, which can interfere with other equipment.*

Motor Overheating

If the VFD is not properly configured, it can cause motor overheating.

Conclusion:

Using a VFD as a phase converter for a 3-phase motor is possible, but it requires careful consideration and proper implementation. Consulting a qualified electrician and following the recommendations above can increase the chances of success. Flag for review
