Question: a guy asked me if a second meter (service) can be put on his garage so he can have a wood shop of some kind. is this possible ?so he would have 2 complete services one for Home. one for garage (attached)

Yes, it is possible to have a second meter installed for a garage, even if it is attached to the home.

Requirements

Separate electrical service panel

The garage must have its own electrical service panel, which will be connected to the second meter.

Dedicated wiring

All wiring from the second meter to the garage must be dedicated to that space and not connected to any other circuits in the home.

Conduit or underground trench

The wiring must be run in conduit or an underground trench to protect it from damage.

Inspection and permit

The installation of the second meter and electrical service must be inspected and permitted by the local electrical authority.

Benefits

Separate billing

Having a separate meter for the garage allows the homeowner to track and control the electricity usage specific to the wood shop.

Isolation

If there is an electrical issue in the wood shop, it will not affect the power to the home.

Safety

Dedicated wiring and a second meter can enhance electrical safety in the garage, especially if heavy machinery or power tools are used.

Additional Considerations

Cost

Installing a second meter and electrical service can be costly.

Meter placement

The second meter must be accessible for billing purposes and meter reading.

Wiring capacity

Ensure that the electrical wiring in the garage is sufficient to handle the load of the wood shop equipment.*

Insurance

The homeowner may need to update their insurance policy to cover the additional electrical service and equipment in the garage.

Note:
The process and requirements for installing a second meter may vary depending on local electrical codes and regulations. It is recommended to consult with a licensed electrician and the local electrical authority for specific guidance. Flag for review
