Question: If you install a cord on your DW and put an outlet in the adjacent cabinet under the sink. Does it have to be a GFCI protected circuit / outlet. Same for microwave ?Both are fastened in place.
Dishwashers
Yes, it requires a GFCI-protected circuit. The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that dishwashers be connected to a GFCI-protected circuit to protect against electrical shock hazards in the event of a ground fault.
Microwaves
No, it does not require a GFCI-protected circuit. The NEC does not require GFCI protection for microwave ovens that are permanently installed or hardwired.
Outlet in Adjacent Cabinet
Yes, it should be GFCI-protected. The NEC requires that any outlet within 6 feet of a water source, including sinks, bathtubs, and showers, be GFCI-protected. This provides protection against shock hazards in wet areas.
Additional Considerations: The outlet for the dishwasher should be located within 6 feet of the dishwasher's connection point. The outlet for the microwave should be located near the microwave and should be easily accessible.* All electrical work should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with applicable codes and regulations.
