Question: If some electrical conduits (suppose IMC) to be buried underground. Then how to support them, using unistut, or just laying them in the soil, or make a trench? And for the pullbox, is there any guideline the depth of the pullbox for underground conduits. If it is too deep, then access the pullbox is difficult.
Underground Conduit Support UniStrut
UniStrut can be used to support IMC conduits in underground applications. Install the UniStrut rails vertically or horizontally, depending on the conduit layout. Secure the conduits to the UniStrut using clamps.
Concrete Trench
Create a shallow trench, approximately 12-18 inches deep, and fill it with concrete. Lay the IMC conduits in the trench and backfill with soil. This method provides excellent support and protection.
Soil Burial
In some cases, IMC conduits can be buried directly in the soil without additional support. However, ensure that the soil is stable and not subject to movement or erosion.
Pullbox Depth
There is no specific guideline for the depth of underground pullboxes. However, consider the following factors: Accessibility
The pullbox should be accessible for maintenance and pulling of cables. A depth of 12-18 inches generally provides sufficient access while minimizing the risk of damage from digging activities.
Frost Depth
In cold climates, the pullbox should be buried below the frost line to prevent heaving and damage.
Soil Conditions
The pullbox should be placed in soil that is stable and not prone to erosion or flooding.
Ease of Installation
The depth should be shallow enough to allow for easy installation and excavation.
Additional Considerations Use a conduit sealant to prevent water and debris from entering the conduits. Protect the pullbox with a cover and sealant to prevent access by unauthorized personnel and the elements. Label the pullbox clearly to indicate its purpose and contents.* Consider using a backfill material that does not contain sharp objects or rocks that could damage the conduits. Flag for review
