Question: This is in Seattle WA, my understanding is that the answer here might vary regionally or by inspector...I am moving the load center from the basement exterior wall to a parallel wall about 3' away. The new service lines would pass under a staircase in a drywall enclosed space (no access). Do I need an outside service disconnect in this case or can I get away without it?
In Seattle, WA, you would require an exterior service disconnect in this case.According to the Seattle Electrical Code (SEC), an exterior service disconnect is required for all new service installations and alterations to existing services. This disconnect must be readily accessible from the outside of the building and must be located within 6 feet of the point where the service enters the building. In your case, the new service lines would pass under a staircase in a drywall enclosed space with no access. This would make it difficult to access the service disconnect in the event of an emergency. Therefore, an exterior service disconnect would be required. Flag for review
