Question: I took a NECA MLU course and they said that sometime a labor unit will be reduced for pipe if there are multiple parallel sets. Why is this? Because of the setup time, they are located right next to each other? I think also because a MLU includes material handling time and these would be brought to the location together. Thanks.

Yes, that is correct. A labor unit (LU) for pipe is sometimes reduced for multiple parallel sets due to the following reasons: Reduced setup time

Installing multiple parallel sets of pipes can be more efficient than installing individual sets because less time is spent on setting up equipment and materials. With multiple sets being installed in parallel, the setup process can be optimized, leading to time savings.

Proximity

When multiple parallel sets of pipes are installed, they are often located close to each other. This proximity reduces the time required for workers to move between sets, resulting in increased efficiency.*

Material handling:
As you mentioned, a MLU includes material handling time. When multiple parallel sets are installed, the materials can be brought to the location in bulk and distributed efficiently to the different sets. This reduces the time spent on material handling and improves overall productivity.By reducing the LU for multiple parallel sets of pipes, the NECA MLU course takes into account the increased efficiency gained from the reduced setup time, proximity, and material handling factors.
