Question: This may be a bit premature but i am about to go out to look at several compresores that have failed over the last 6 weeks = 5 compressorsapparently the compressors are 35hpfor a/c unitscan run in either directionthe first one tripped out the ground fault.and one of them was taken apart and all 3 windings are burnt.just looking for some early advice any help is appreciated?? I was initially thinking surge suppressor???

Troubleshooting Failed Compressors1. Determine Common Factors

Are all the compressors the same model and age? Are they installed in similar operating conditions (e.g., temperature, load)? Have there been any recent electrical work or power surges?

2. Check Electrical Supply

Verify that the electrical supply is stable and within the recommended voltage range. Inspect wiring for loose connections or shorts. Consider installing a surge suppressor to protect against voltage spikes.

3. Examine Compressors

Inspect the compressors for physical damage, leaks, or corrosion. Check the windings for continuity and resistance. Measure the insulation resistance between the windings and the ground.

4. Analyze Failure Modes

Ground fault

This can indicate a short circuit between a winding and the ground.

Burnt windings

This can result from overheating due to excessive load, electrical surges, or lubrication issues.

Can run in either direction

This typically indicates a problem with the contactor or control circuit.

5. Other Considerations

Check the refrigeration system for leaks, refrigerant charge, and proper operation. Inspect the capacitor for any signs of damage or failure. Review maintenance records for compliance and any previous issues.

Early Advice:
Prioritize safety by de-energizing all equipment and using proper lockout/tagout procedures. Document all observations, measurements, and suspected causes. Contact the compressor manufacturer or a qualified HVAC technician for further diagnostics and repairs.* Consider replacing multiple failed compressors within a short period as it may indicate a systemic issue.
