Question: Anyone ever run conduit through a truck scale pit?I have a client who tells me I can't run conduit exposed in certain areas, and they don't want to pay to cut long runs of concrete, and they can't dig down due to environmental restrictions. The most recent thought was to run conduit to a point where we can drop down into concrete, cut an allowable section of concrete and run the conduit through a truck scale pit... avoiding obstruction of the scale of course, and then poking out to the point where we need to terminate. Do I sound crazy for considering this plan?

Running conduit through a truck scale pit is not a common practice, and it does present some potential challenges. However, it may be a viable option if other methods are not feasible.

Potential Challenges

Vibration

Truck scales are subject to heavy vibrations, which could damage the conduit or connections.

Moisture and Corrosion

Truck scale pits can be damp and corrosive environments, which could affect the integrity of the conduit and its connections.

Obstruction

The conduit must be carefully routed to avoid obstructing the scale's operation or creating a tripping hazard.

Installation Difficulty

Installing conduit in a truck scale pit can be difficult and time-consuming.

Considerations for Design and Installation

Conduit Type

Use a conduit that is resistant to vibration, moisture, and corrosion, such as PVC or stainless steel.

Protection

Provide additional protection for the conduit and connections using flexible conduit, cable trays, or other means.

Routing

Carefully plan the route of the conduit to avoid areas of high traffic or potential obstruction.

Sealing

Seal all openings in the pit to prevent moisture and debris from entering the conduit.

Support

Ensure the conduit is adequately supported throughout its length to prevent damage from vibration or movement.

Other Considerations

Permit Requirements

Check with local authorities to determine if any permits are required for installing conduit in a truck scale pit.

Safety

Prioritize safety during installation and maintenance by following proper procedures and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Warranty

Discuss warranty coverage with the client and ensure that any alterations to the truck scale do not void the warranty.

Alternatives to Consider

Overhead

Running conduit overhead may be an option if there is sufficient clearance.

Buried

If digging is permissible in some areas, burying the conduit may be a more conventional solution.*

Wireless

Consider using wireless technology to eliminate the need for conduit altogether.

Conclusion:

While running conduit through a truck scale pit is not a typical practice, it may be feasible with careful planning and engineering. It is important to address potential challenges such as vibration, moisture, and obstruction, and to adhere to all safety and permitting requirements. Alternative options should also be considered before finalizing a decision. Flag for review
