Question: I have residential townhome. Each townhome has 200A service. I have incoming service utility cables coming into utility meter. Was wondering what is the typical size cable into utility meter for 200A service to size grounding electrode conductor, main bonding jumper?

Typical Cable Size for 200A Service Service Entrance Cable (SE Cable)

2/0 AWG Aluminum or 1/0 AWG Copper (Typically 3-conductor for single-phase service)

Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC) and Main Bonding Jumper (MBJ)

The size of the grounding electrode conductor (GEC) and main bonding jumper (MBJ) is determined based on the size of the service entrance conductors, as follows

GEC

For Cu Conductors

Same size as service entrance conductors

For Al Conductors

Two trade sizes larger than service entrance conductors

MBJ
For Cu Conductors

Same size as service entrance conductors

For Al Conductors

One trade size larger than service entrance conductors

Example for 2/0 AWG Aluminum Service Entrance Cables

GEC

250 kcmil Aluminum

MBJ

150 kcmil Aluminum

Additional Notes:
The values provided are for typical residential applications. Local codes and regulations may vary. Always consult with a licensed electrician or local electrical authority for specific requirements in your area. The size of the utility cables coming into the utility meter should be the same as the service entrance cables. Flag for review
