Question: Hello everyone, I have a customer that needs to move his 200 amp meter base to the opposite side of the house, he currently has a 14kw Generac generator with a Centurion 12 circuit - 100 amp indoor transfer switch. I would like to remove the Centurion panel and install an outdoor 200 amp Generac automatic transfer switch below the meter base. I am curious if this will work, I have called Generac customer service and they couldn't help me. It seems pretty straightforward to me, but I do not want to purchase and install everything and have it not work. Thanks for the help!
You're on the right track. Here's a breakdown of why your plan should work and some key considerations
Why it Should Work (The Logic):
200A Service Compatibility
A 200A Generac automatic transfer switch (ATS) is designed to handle a 200A service. You're upgrading the transfer switch's capacity to match the service amperage, which is good.
14kW Generator Size
A 14kW generator is well within the capacity of a 200A ATS. The ATS will simply switch between the utility feed and the generator feed based on power availability.
Outdoor Location
Placing the ATS outdoors, below the meter base, is a common and code-compliant practice as long as you use an outdoor-rated ATS.
Automatic Transfer
The Generac ATS will automatically switch power sources, providing seamless backup power during outages, which is what your customer likely wants.
Important Considerations and Steps
Model Selection
Generac 200A ATS Model
You need to identify the specific Generac 200A ATS model you plan to use. Make sure it's compatible with your generator and has the features you need (e.g., load shedding capabilities).
Generator Compatibility
Confirm the ATS is designed to work specifically with Generac generators. Different generators might have different control wiring requirements.
Sizing
Verify that the 14kW generator has enough capacity to support all the circuits that will be transferred to generator power. While the ATS is rated for 200A, the generator's output limits how much load can be supplied.
Consider Load Management
If the generator is close to its maximum output with the intended load, explore load shedding features in the ATS. Load shedding allows you to prioritize essential circuits during generator operation and prevent overloading.2.
Wiring and Connections
Utility Feed
The utility feed will connect to the line side of the ATS.
Load Side
The load side of the ATS will connect to your house panel(s) feeding all of your loads.
Generator Connection
Connect the generator output to the appropriate terminals within the ATS. Pay close attention to voltage, phase, and neutral bonding.
Control Wiring
Connect the control wires between the generator and the ATS. This wiring tells the ATS when the generator is running and ready to supply power. (This is where the generac compatibility comes in)
Grounding
Properly ground the ATS according to code. This is critical for safety.
Neutral Bonding
Neutral bonding is a crucial aspect. Generally, the neutral should be bonded at only one point in the system. Typically, this is at the main service panel. The ATS might have a neutral bonding jumper that needs to be enabled or disabled depending on your specific setup.
Consult the ATS installation manual and local electrical codes to ensure proper neutral bonding. Improper neutral bonding can create circulating currents and safety hazards.3. Code Compliance
Local Codes and Permits
This is not optional. You must obtain the necessary permits and comply with all local electrical codes. The inspector will verify your wiring, grounding, and bonding.
NEC (National Electrical Code)
Ensure your installation adheres to the NEC. Pay close attention to sections related to generator installations, transfer switches, and grounding.
Sizing Conductors
Use appropriately sized conductors for all connections based on the amperage and distance.4.
Installation Procedure
De-energize Everything
Before starting any work, completely de-energize the service.
Mounting
Securely mount the ATS according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Wiring
Carefully wire the ATS, paying attention to the proper terminals and torque specifications.
Testing
After installation, thoroughly test the ATS to ensure it switches properly and the generator supplies power to the intended circuits.5.
Documentation
ATS Manual
Keep the ATS installation and operating manual readily available for future reference.
Wiring Diagram
Create a clear wiring diagram of the entire system, including the ATS, generator, and main panel.
Why Generac Support Might Not Have Been Helpful (and Why You Still Need to Follow Their Documentation)
Generac customer service representatives often can't give specific installation advice because:
Liability
They can't be held liable for improper installations.
Code Variations
Local codes vary, and they can't know the specifics of your area.
Complexity
Each installation is unique. However, always refer to the specific installation manual for the Generac ATS model you are using. This manual will provide detailed wiring diagrams, configuration instructions, and troubleshooting tips.
In summary, your plan to install a 200A Generac ATS below the relocated meter base should work if you
Select the correct ATS model that is compatible with your generac generator. Follow all wiring and grounding requirements. Comply with local electrical codes. Thoroughly test the system.
Recommendation: If you are not entirely comfortable with any aspect of this project, consult with a licensed electrician experienced in generator and ATS installations. A mistake can be very dangerous or very expensive. It's worth the investment to ensure a safe and reliable installation. Flag for review
