Question: The shoulder on these MC connectors is too small. As you can see it doesnt cover the KO, and you can actually get the entire shoulder to go thru the KO. Has anyone ever filed a compliant with UL? I am thinking of trying it.

Yes, it's definitely worth considering filing a complaint with UL if you're encountering MC connectors with shoulders too small to properly cover the knockout (KO). Here's a breakdown of why and how to approach it

Why Filing a Complaint is Important:
Safety Hazard

MC connectors that don't properly cover KOs can create a safety hazard. Exposed conductors, especially in metal boxes, increase the risk of shorts, grounds, and potentially fire. It also creates a potential entry point for debris or water.

Code Violation

Electrical codes (like the NEC in the US) require proper fittings and secure connections. Connectors that are too small fail to meet this requirement.

Product Quality and Integrity

UL listings signify that a product has been tested and meets certain safety and performance standards. If a UL-listed product consistently fails to meet basic dimensional requirements, it undermines the value and reliability of the UL mark.

Holding Manufacturers Accountable

Filing a complaint helps hold manufacturers accountable for the quality and safety of their products. It encourages them to investigate and correct design or manufacturing flaws.

Preventing Future Problems

Your complaint can help prevent future instances of substandard connectors being sold and used, protecting other electricians and the public.

Steps to Take Before Filing a Complaint (and Information to Gather)

Document the Problem Thoroughly

This is the
most important step.

Photographs

Take clear, well-lit photos showing: The MC connector itself. The MC connector inserted into the knockout, highlighting the inadequate shoulder coverage. Use a ruler or measuring tape to show how much of the KO is exposed. Show the connector installed with the MC cable inserted. Close-ups of any markings on the connector, including the UL listing mark, manufacturer name/logo, model number, and any other identifying information. The knockout itself. Make sure you know the size of the KO. The packaging, if you still have it.

Measurements

Use calipers or a precise measuring tool to measure: The diameter of the knockout. The outside diameter of the connector shoulder. The inside diameter of the connector shoulder (the hole the cable goes through). The thickness of the connector shoulder.

Quantity of Defective Connectors

How many connectors have you encountered this problem with? Is it a single box, or multiple boxes from the same manufacturer? Is it a consistent issue? This information will help determine if it's a widespread problem or an isolated incident.

Specific Application

Describe the specific electrical box and MC cable you were using. This might help UL understand the context and if there are any compatibility issues (though this is unlikely to be the cause).

Purchase Information

Where did you purchase the connectors? When? Keep any receipts or invoices.2.

Contact the Manufacturer First (Optional, but Recommended)

Before going to UL, consider contacting the manufacturer of the MC connector. Explain the problem and provide the documentation you've gathered. They may be willing to address the issue directly (e.g., by replacing the connectors or investigating their manufacturing process). Keep a record of your communication with the manufacturer. If they are unresponsive or unwilling to resolve the problem, you'll have this information when you contact UL.

How to File a Complaint with UL

Go to the UL Website

Navigate to the official UL website (ul.com).2.

Find the "Report a Problem" or "Contact Us" Section

Look for a section dedicated to reporting issues with UL-listed products. The exact wording and location may vary, but it's usually found in the "Contact Us," "Support," or "Compliance" areas of the site. You might find a link specifically for reporting counterfeit or non-compliant products.3.

Fill Out the Complaint Form (or Prepare Your Email)

UL likely has an online form to fill out. Be as detailed and specific as possible. Include all the information you gathered in Step 1. If there's no form, draft a clear and concise email.
4.

Attach Your Documentation

Upload your photos, measurements, and any other relevant documents to the complaint form or attach them to your email.5.

Submit Your Complaint

Once you've completed the form or email, submit it to UL.6.

Keep a Record of Your Submission

Save a copy of your complaint form or email, along with any confirmation or tracking numbers you receive from UL.

What to Expect After Filing a Complaint

UL will investigate

UL will review your complaint and may contact you for further information. They may also conduct their own testing and evaluation of the product.

Corrective Action (Potentially)

If UL determines that the product is indeed non-compliant, they may take corrective action, which could include:
Working with the manufacturer to correct the design or manufacturing process. Requiring the manufacturer to recall the defective connectors. Removing the UL listing from the product.

No Guarantee of a Specific Outcome

While your complaint is important, UL's actions are determined by their own internal processes and the severity of the issue. There's no guarantee of a specific outcome or timeline.

You may not be informed of the outcome

UL's investigation is between them and the manufacturer. They will likely not share the results of their investigation with you, though they may inform you that they received and investigated your complaint.

Additional Tips

Be polite and professional

Maintain a professional and respectful tone in all your communications with the manufacturer and UL.

Be persistent

If you don't hear back from UL within a reasonable timeframe, follow up with them to inquire about the status of your complaint.

Consider contacting your local electrical inspector

They may also be interested in this issue and may be able to provide additional guidance or support.

Share your experience (carefully):
You can share your experience on online forums for electricians or contractors, but be sure to do so responsibly and avoid making defamatory statements. Stick to the facts and focus on the safety concerns.Filing a complaint with UL is a worthwhile step to ensure the safety and quality of electrical products. Your contribution can help prevent potential hazards and improve industry standards. Good luck! Flag for review
