Question: Hello all. I am bidding a city job, ( so are 19 other ECs). Anyway my supply house, says they cant get me my lighting # until bid day. Is this happening to you fellas? I need the number at least one day prior to bid to all prospective GCs. On bid day is ridiculous, the GC needs the number so they can pick which EC they want to enter the bid with. IMO this is crap. Everybody is shopping for a competitive price these days, we are too. But to tie the ECs hands by not giving me my # is not cool. Oh well , I vented any thoughts????Tim
Understanding the Situation City jobs often have strict bidding procedures, including deadlines for submitting bids. Lighting numbers are essential for general contractors (GCs) to accurately price their bids. Supply houses may face logistical or supply chain challenges that delay the provision of lighting numbers.
Consequences for Electrical Contractors (ECs) Delays in obtaining lighting numbers can put ECs at a competitive disadvantage. GCs may be reluctant to include ECs in bids without knowing the lighting costs. This can reduce the chances of ECs being awarded contracts.
Possible Solutions1. Communicate with the City
Reach out to the city officials responsible for the bidding process and express your concerns. Explain the importance of timely access to lighting numbers for both ECs and GCs.
2. Negotiate with the Supply House
Contact your supply house and explain the situation. Request an estimated delivery date for the lighting numbers. Offer a contingency plan, such as using a placeholder number or adjusting the bid price later, if necessary.
3. Seek Alternative Providers
Consider reaching out to other supply houses that may have the lighting numbers available sooner. Be prepared to compare prices and ensure the quality of the products.
4. Contact the GCs
Inform the GCs who you are interested in working with about the delay in obtaining the lighting numbers. Assure them that you are actively working on getting the information and will provide it as soon as possible. Explain your situation and ask for their understanding.
Other Considerations Bid day is often a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines. Delays in providing lighting numbers can cause confusion and frustration for all parties involved.* It is important to maintain open communication and be proactive in addressing any potential issues. Flag for review
