Question: If I tap off a outlet in the bedroom to add a switch and a light, do I have to now bring the switch and light to code? Like if there's no ground in the outlet, do have have to add a ground for the switch and light? And do i need to add a AFCI breaker. Thank you for your help.

Grounding

Yes, you must add a ground wire for the switch and light if there is no ground in the outlet. This is a safety requirement to protect against electrical shocks.

AFCI Breaker

You do not need to add an AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker for the switch and light if there is no AFCI breaker already installed in the circuit. AFCI breakers are required on circuits that serve outlets, but not on lighting circuits.

Other Code Requirements

The switch and light must be installed according to the National Electrical Code (NEC). This includes: Using the correct size wire for the circuit Installing the switch and light in an approved electrical box Connecting the wires properly

Additional Considerations

If the outlet is not properly grounded, it may be an indication of a larger electrical issue in the home. It is recommended to have an electrician inspect the electrical system to ensure safety. If you are not comfortable with electrical work, it is best to hire a licensed electrician to perform the installation.

Summary:
Add a ground wire for the switch and light. You do not need to add an AFCI breaker unless required by other existing circuits.* Follow all other NEC requirements for switch and light installation. Flag for review
