Question: I am looking at a micropace heart machine that is being installed in a hospital. They want to run the extension cables that will be hooked to the patient under the floor in PVC. These cables are very low voltage and are basically just communication cables. I am having a hard time deciding whether the PVC is allowed per 517. Any thoughts?
Section 517.30 - General
This section only applies to cables and raceways for power and lighting systems. Since the micropace heart machine cables are communication cables, Section 517.30 does not apply.
Section 725 - Class 2 and Class 3 Remote-Control, Signaling, and Power-Limited Circuits
This section applies to Class 2 circuits, which includes communication cables.
Section 725.56 - Conductors of Different Systems in Same Raceway or Enclosure
This section does not prohibit the installation of Class 2 communication cables in PVC conduit or raceways with other Class 2 or Class 3 circuits. Therefore, it is permissible to install the micropace heart machine communication cables in PVC conduits under the floor, provided that the following conditions are met: The cables are Class 2 communication cables. The cables are installed in a raceway or enclosure dedicated to Class 2 or Class 3 circuits.* The raceway or enclosure is installed in accordance with Section 725.56. Flag for review
