Question: Do u have to have motion sensors at the entrance doors of a room that will have 10 or more occupants? Say, like for a conferance room!

Yes, according to the 2021 National Electrical Code (NEC), motion sensors are required at the entrance doors of rooms that will have 10 or more occupants. This requirement is found in NEC Section 404.11(C)(2) and applies to all rooms used for human occupancy, including conference rooms, meeting rooms, and classrooms.

Exception

Motion sensors are not required at the entrance doors of rooms that are used exclusively for storage or maintenance.

Reason for Requirement

Motion sensors help to conserve energy by automatically turning off the lights when the room is unoccupied. This can significantly reduce energy consumption, especially in rooms that are frequently used but not always occupied.

Additional Requirements

Motion sensors must be located within 6 feet of the doorway. Motion sensors must be adjusted to provide a minimum of 15 minutes of "on" time after the last occupant leaves the room. Motion sensors must be tested regularly to ensure proper operation.

Benefits of Motion Sensors:
Reduced energy consumption Improved occupant comfort by automatically adjusting lighting levels Enhanced security by providing visual evidence of occupancy Flag for review
