Question: I'm trying to get into public electrical utility work (Ex: Lineman). Any feed back, on how I may be able to get in, without all the politics would be nice!!! I wish i knew someone, so I can have a chance!!! I'm in Washington State. Feel free to PM me, if this tread gets closed.

Without Political Connections

1. Education and Certification

Obtain a high school diploma or equivalent. Consider earning an associate's degree in electrical construction or line work. Acquire necessary certifications, such as CPR, First Aid, and OSHA 10-Hour Safety Training.

2. Experience and Apprenticeship

Explore volunteer opportunities with non-profit organizations or community groups that offer hands-on electrical work. Seek out internships with electrical contractors or utilities. Apply for apprenticeship programs offered by unions (IBEW, NECA) or utilities.

3. Networking

Attend industry events and workshops to connect with utility professionals. Join professional organizations like the International Lineman's Rodeo Association (ILRA). Reach out to utility companies directly and express your interest in their lineman program.

4. Preparation and Physical Fitness

Stay physically fit and be prepared for strenuous work that involves climbing, lifting, and working in all weather conditions. Develop a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
