Question: I guess I should have asked before I sent in a proposal but do you think that 250.122 (A) should be rewritten. It states, in no case shall the egc be required t be larger than the circuit conductors. If we install 7 conduits with1/0 conductors on a 1000 amp breaker then the egc is required to be 2/0 in each conduit. Do you all agree or disagree with me?

Section 250.122(A) of the National Electrical Code (NEC)Current Text

"In no case shall the equipment grounding conductor (EGC) be required to be larger than the circuit conductors."

Your Interpretation

You believe that the language in 250.122(A) should be rewritten because it conflicts with the requirement in 250.122(C)(1), which states that for parallel runs of multiple raceways, the EGC must be sized based on the ampacity of the overcurrent device protecting the conductors.

Alternate Interpretation

Some experts interpret 250.122(A) to mean that the EGC is never required to be larger than the individual circuit conductors, regardless of the number of parallel raceways. They argue that 250.122(C)(1) applies only to situations where the EGC is installed in a separate raceway from the circuit conductors.

NEC Committee Position

The NEC Committee has not issued any formal interpretation of 250.122(A) in relation to multiple parallel raceways.

Recommendation

Clarification from the NEC Committee would be beneficial to address the differing interpretations of 250.122(A). In the meantime, it is recommended to consult with local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) for guidance on this issue.

Conclusion:

While there is a basis for your concern, the current language of 250.122(A) allows for different interpretations. Until the NEC Committee clarifies its intent, it is prudent to seek further guidance from AHJs on this matter. Flag for review
