Question: If the generator sits outside and has a belly tank (around 850 gals diesel), does any codes state how far the generator need to be away from building footprint/exterior wall? Looked at NFPA-110 and couldn't find any requirement. Thank you!

NFPA 110 Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems

NFPA 110 does not specifically address the distance between a generator and a building. However, it does provide general requirements for the location of generators: Section 5.3.1 Location

Generators shall be located in accordance with applicable codes and standards, including NFPA 110.

Section 5.3.5 Generator Enclosures

The requirements for generator enclosures may vary depending on the type of generator and its location. For example, enclosures for exterior generators may need to be weatherproof and meet additional requirements for noise control.

International Building Code (IBC)

The IBC may have additional requirements for the location of generators, as it governs the construction and safety of buildings. However, the specific requirements may vary depending on the jurisdiction.

Local Codes and Regulations

Local codes and regulations may also impose specific requirements for the location of generators. These requirements can vary significantly from one jurisdiction to another.

Recommended Practices

In general, it is recommended to maintain a minimum distance of 10 feet between a generator and a building footprint or exterior wall. This provides adequate space for ventilation, access, and fire safety.

Additional Considerations

When determining the appropriate distance, consider the following factors: Generator Size and Fuel

Larger generators and diesel generators may require more distance due to their increased fuel capacity and noise levels.

Local Regulations

Always check with local authorities to ensure compliance with any applicable codes and regulations.*

Specific Use:
The intended use of the generator may impact the distance requirements. For example, generators used for emergency backup power may require a different distance than those used for continuous operation. Flag for review
