Question: in Missouri, we have to obtain a different license in each jurisdiction that we work in. I have for years paid renewal fees for my license in Springfield and Jefferson City. Columbia has yet to charge for a renewal but I am sure it is coming. It gets expensive as some of you already know.I have just today been informed of a law on the books in Missouri that may allow us to carry one license that is valid in all jurisdictions.Missouri Revised Statutes Chapter 67 Section 67.275 statesElectrical contractor licenses issued by political subdivisions valid in all political subdivisions.67.275. 1. The holder of a current and active electrical contractor license issued by any political subdivision of this state, whose requirements are equal to or exceed the requirements for obtaining an electrical contractor license on August 28, 2004, in St. Louis County, shall be valid within any political subdivision of this state.2. The provisions of this section shall not prohibit any political subdivision in this state from enforcing any code or law not contained herein, or to:(1) Issue an electrical contractor license valid for that political subdivision, except for a person who holds a license as provided in subsection 1 of this section;(2) Require a business license to perform electrical contracting work;(3) Issue electrical contracting permits;(4) Enforce codes of the political subdivision; or(5) Inspect the work of a licensee.3. Political subdivisions of this state that do not have the authority to issue or require electrical contractor licenses prior to August 28, 2004, shall not be granted such authority under the provisions of this section.http://www.moga.mo.gov/statutes/C000-099/0670000275.HTMIn 2004, St. Louis county only required that you meet their hours requirements before taking the test and receive a passing score. Has anyone else used this law to pull permits in one place while being licensed in another.
Yes, some electrical contractors in Missouri have successfully used the law (Missouri Revised Statutes Chapter 67 Section 67.275) to obtain permits in one jurisdiction while being licensed in another. This law allows electrical contractors who hold a current and active license issued by any political subdivision in Missouri, with requirements equal to or exceeding those of St. Louis County in 2004, to have their license recognized as valid in all political subdivisions within the state. Here are some examples: Contractor A holds an electrical contractor license issued by St. Louis County. They can use this license to pull permits and perform electrical work in any other political subdivision in Missouri, such as Springfield or Columbia, without obtaining an additional license in those jurisdictions. Contractor B holds an electrical contractor license issued by Springfield, which has requirements that meet or exceed those of St. Louis County in 2004. They can use this license to pull permits and perform electrical work in any other political subdivision in Missouri, including Columbia, without obtaining an additional license in those jurisdictions. It's important to note that this law does not prohibit political subdivisions from enforcing their own codes or laws, requiring business licenses, issuing electrical contracting permits, enforcing codes, or inspecting the work of licensees. Additionally, political subdivisions that did not have the authority to issue electrical contractor licenses before August 28, 2004, are not granted that authority under this law.To use this law effectively, you should: Ensure that your electrical contractor license meets or exceeds the requirements of St. Louis County in 2004. Keep your license current and active. Be aware of the specific codes and requirements of the political subdivision where you plan to work. Contact the local building department to confirm that they accept licenses issued by other jurisdictions under Missouri Revised Statutes Chapter 67 Section 67.275.By following these steps, you can take advantage of this law to streamline your licensing process and save money on renewal fees.
