Concerns Regarding Electrical Wiring on Wet ColumnsTo: Superintendent of Schools, Palm Beach County School BoardFrom

Date

March 8, 2023Dear Superintendent,I am writing to express my grave concerns regarding the recent decision by the Palm Beach County School Board to install electrical wiring for lights on wet columns for metal walkways. This decision poses a serious safety hazard to students and undermines the Board's commitment to providing a safe and healthy learning environment.

Electrical Safety Concerns

The National Electrical Code (NEC) explicitly prohibits installing electrical wiring and fixtures on wet surfaces or exposed to moisture. This is due to the increased risk of electrical shock, fire, and electrocution. Wet columns, by nature, are susceptible to water infiltration and condensation, creating a dangerous environment for electrical components. The Board's assertion that the electrical wires are protected by ground wires and circuit breakers is insufficient. These safety measures are designed to mitigate the effects of electrical faults but do not eliminate the risk of an initial shock or electrocution. Junction boxes designed for damp conditions are not suitable for prolonged exposure to moisture found on wet columns.

Student Safety

Students are frequently in close proximity to the walkways and could be exposed to the electrical hazard. Children often engage in playful activities, increasing the likelihood of accidental contact with the electrical components. The Board's statement that students are not in any danger is not supported by scientific evidence or industry standards.

Code Violations

The installation of electrical wiring on wet columns violates the NEC and likely other applicable building codes. Failure to comply with code requirements could result in fines, penalties, and potential liability for the School Board.

Recommendations

I urge the School Board to reconsider its decision and take immediate action to address this safety hazard. I recommend the following measures:
Remove all electrical wiring and fixtures from the wet columns. Explore alternative lighting solutions that comply with electrical safety codes. Reevaluate the design of the walkways to minimize moisture exposure.* Provide clear and concise safety instructions to students and staff regarding the safe use of walkways.

Conclusion:

The safety of our students must be paramount in all decisions made by the Palm Beach County School Board. The current installation of electrical wiring on wet columns poses an unacceptable risk and cannot be dismissed with superficial justifications. I implore you to take swift and decisive action to rectify this situation and ensure the well-being of our children.Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.Sincerely,[Concerned Citizen] Flag for review
