Question: I have a Leviton receptacle from about 1970 connected to aluminum wiring. This 15 amp receptacle is original just like the wiring. The receptacle only says Leviton and made in America on it. Curious if this outlet is also rated for aluminum?

Without specific model or catalog number information, it is difficult to determine if the Leviton receptacle from 1970 is rated for aluminum wiring. However, here are some general guidelines

Prior to 1972:
Most electrical devices, including receptacles, were not specifically designed or rated for aluminum wiring.

After 1972

The National Electrical Code (NEC) required electrical devices to be labeled as "CO/ALR" or "AL9CU" to indicate their suitability for use with aluminum wiring.

Your Receptacle

If your Leviton receptacle was manufactured after 1972 and does not have the "CO/ALR" or "AL9CU" markings, it is

unlikely
to be rated for aluminum wiring. If it was manufactured before 1972, it is possible that it is not rated for aluminum and may not be safe to use with aluminum wiring.

Recommendations

Safest Option

Replace the receptacle with a modern one that is specifically designed and rated for aluminum wiring.

Alternative Option

If you are unable to replace the receptacle, you can use a listed aluminum-to-copper adapter (known as a "pigtail") to connect aluminum wiring to the receptacle.

Note:
Aluminum wiring can be hazardous if not properly maintained and connected. If you have any concerns, it is always best to consult with a qualified electrician for proper inspection and maintenance of your electrical system. Flag for review
