Question: Our MEP company is doing the electrical plans for an apartment renovation. I'm trying to determine, based on the IECC, where lighting controls will be required. Can anyone offer insight on what's required?

IECC Requirements for Lighting ControlsManual Controls

All lighting circuits serving enclosed spaces with an area of 100 square feet or more must have at least one manual on/off control located at the main entrance to the space.

Automatic Controls

Daylight Harvesting

For spaces with a dominant use of daylighting, automatic controls that reduce lighting output when natural light is available must be installed. These controls must be installed in spaces with: A window area equal to or greater than 6% of the floor area. A minimum of 75% of the lights controlled by the daylighting controls.

Occupancy Sensing

For spaces that are typically unoccupied for periods of time, such as restrooms, storage rooms, and maintenance closets, automatic occupancy sensors must be installed to turn off lights when the space is unoccupied.

Vacancy Sensing

For spaces that are typically vacant for extended periods, such as tenant spaces, conference rooms, and public restrooms, automatic vacancy sensors must be installed to turn off lights when the space is vacant.

Time-of-Day Controls

For outdoor lighting, such as parking lots and building entrances, automatic time-of-day controls must be installed to turn off lights during non-operating hours.

Additional Requirements for Multifamily Buildings

Common Areas

All common areas, such as lobbies, hallways, and laundry rooms, must be controlled by automatic occupancy or vacancy sensors.

Unit Kitchens and Bathrooms

Lighting controls must be installed in kitchens and bathrooms of all dwelling units to automatically turn off lights when the space is unoccupied.

Exceptions:
Lighting controls are not required for: Emergency lighting Exit lighting Night lights Appliances and other equipment that have built-in lighting controls* Spaces that are less than 50 square feet in area Flag for review
