Question: Hi all,I am trying to design a system for the following areas.Class 1, Div 1, and Class 2, Div, 2i am looking for a barcode scanner that will work in the defined areas, but the ratings are somewhat new to meand I need help.I have a scanner, intrensically safe, but the ratings are as followsEx protection typeII 2G Ex ib IIC T4-20 ?C < Ta < +50 ?CII 2D ibD 21 T135 ?C-20 ?C < Ta < +50 ?CWould someone please explain them. Thanks in advance,James

Class 1 and Class 2 Divisions Class 1

Areas where hazardous gases or vapors may be present all the time or occasionally.

Division 1

Areas where hazardous gases or vapors are likely to be present in sufficient quantities to be ignited by a spark or other ignition source.

Division 2

Areas where hazardous gases or vapors are unlikely to be present in sufficient quantities to be ignited by a spark or other ignition source.

Ex Protection Type
Ex

European Union designation for explosion protection.

ib

Intrinsic safety, which means the device does not generate sparks or other ignition sources that could ignite flammable gases or vapors.

IIC

Gas group that includes hydrogen, methane, and propane.

T4

Temperature class that specifies the maximum surface temperature of the device at which no ignition can occur.

ibD

Dust protection, with the "D" indicating that the device is suitable for use in dusty atmospheres.

T135

Temperature class that specifies the maximum surface temperature of the device at which dust ignition cannot occur.

Explanations
II 2G Ex ib IIC T4

This rating indicates that the scanner is suitable for use in Class 2, Division 1 hazardous areas containing gases or vapors from Gas Group IIC (e.g., hydrogen, methane, propane) and has a maximum surface temperature of 135°C.

-20 °C < Ta < +50 °C

This indicates the ambient temperature range in which the scanner can operate safely.

II 2D ibD 21 T135 °C
: This rating indicates that the scanner is suitable for use in Class 2, Division 1 and Division 2 hazardous areas containing dust and has a maximum surface temperature of 135°C.

Conclusion

Based on the ratings you provided, the scanner you have is suitable for use in both Class 1, Division 1 and Class 2, Division 2 hazardous areas containing gases or vapors from Gas Group IIC and dust. Flag for review
