Question: Has anybody had any experience with the kits that convert T12 or T8 lamp fixtures to T5? I am talking about the kits that connect directly into T8 or T12 lamp sockets with T5 self-ballasted assembly. It's like replacing a lamp but most of the ones I've seen you have to do some rewiring first. You bypass the existing ballasts and rewire the sockets so that they have line voltage across each set.I want to know the true cost of these kits and the pro and cons of using them on a large scale.

Cost of Kits

The cost of T5 conversion kits can vary depending on the manufacturer, size, and quality. Here's an approximate breakdown: 1-4-foot kits: $15-$30 per kit 8-foot kits: $25-$45 per kitPros Energy efficiency

T5 lamps are more energy-efficient than T8 or T12 lamps.

Long lamp life

T5 lamps typically have a lifespan of 20,000-25,000 hours, significantly longer than T8 or T12 lamps.

Reduced maintenance costs

The longer lamp life translates to fewer lamp replacements and lower maintenance costs.

Improved light quality

T5 lamps provide brighter, more evenly distributed light than T8 or T12 lamps.

Cons
Rewiring required

Most conversion kits require some rewiring of the existing fixture. This can be a time-consuming and potentially hazardous process if not done properly.

Ballast bypassing

Conversion kits bypass the existing ballast, which can limit the number of T5 lamps that can be installed in the fixture.

Compatibility issues

Some conversion kits may not be compatible with all existing fixtures. It's essential to check the compatibility before purchasing.

Large-Scale Use Considerations
Energy savings

Converting a large number of fixtures to T5 can result in significant energy savings.

Maintenance costs

The longer lamp life of T5 lamps can reduce maintenance costs over the long term.

Upfront investment

The initial cost of purchasing and installing conversion kits can be substantial.

Rewiring challenges

Rewiring a large number of fixtures can be a significant undertaking, requiring experienced electricians.

Compatibility

It's crucial to ensure compatibility between conversion kits and existing fixtures to avoid potential issues.

Recommendation

If energy savings, long lamp life, and improved light quality are priorities, T5 conversion kits can be a cost-effective solution for large-scale lighting upgrades. However, it's important to factor in the rewiring requirements, compatibility, and upfront investment before making a decision. Flag for review
